Washington Smoke & CO detectors
Does a landlord have to provide smoke and carbon monoxide detectors in Washington?
Smoke detectors are required in all dwelling units occupied by someone other than the owner. The owner installs them. The tenant maintains them, including batteries. At each vacancy the owner must make sure the detector works before the next tenant moves in. Separately, residential buildings must have carbon monoxide alarms under building code rules.
