Rhode Island Death of a tenant
What happens to the lease when a tenant dies in Rhode Island?
If a tenant dies with no other signer living in the unit, a live-in caregiver or another adult resident may continue the lease for a post-death grace period of 3 months or the rest of the term, whichever is shorter. That person pays the rent and takes on the tenant's duties, and the deceased's unpaid rent stays with the estate.
