Rhode Island Abandoned property
What can a landlord do with property a tenant leaves behind in Rhode Island?
Per the RI Landlord Tenant Handbook (Sept. 2024): after an eviction execution, the landlord must have the tenant's remaining property moved to storage at the landlord's expense, and the tenant must repay moving and storage costs to get it back. A unit is abandoned if the tenant left without notice, rent is more than 15 days unpaid, and substantially all possessions are gone. The landlord may then reclaim the unit if the tenant does not reply within 7 days to a letter sent to the last known address.
