Connecticut Rental licensing / registration

Last reviewed 2026-10-18

Do landlords need a rental license or registration in Connecticut?

Any Connecticut municipality may require a nonresident owner of rental property (or an entity owner's agent in charge) to report a current residential address to the tax assessor or another designated office. Connecticut does not license landlords statewide under this section. A town can set a civil penalty of up to $500 for a first violation and $1,000 for later ones. Statute text: "Any municipality may require the nonresident owner or project-based housing provider of occupied or vacant rental real property to report to the tax assessor, or other municipal office designated by the municipality, the current residential address of the nonresident owner or project-based housing provider of such property" (Conn. Gen. Stat. §§ 47a-6a(b), 47a-6b).
