Last reviewed 2026-10-17

What rights does a tenant have after foreclosure in Rhode Island?

In Rhode Island, an owner that takes a home through foreclosure may evict tenants only for just cause (with exceptions such as a binding sale to a bona fide third party). It must post a notice in the building within 30 days of the foreclosure giving contact details, where to send rent and how to request to stay on. Statute text: "a foreclosing owner shall not evict a tenant except for just cause" (R.I. Gen. Laws § 34-18-38.2).
