North Carolina Interest on deposits
Does a landlord have to pay interest on a security deposit in North Carolina?
North Carolina's Tenant Security Deposit Act (G.S. 42-50 to 42-56, read in full on 2026-10-15) requires deposits to be held in a trust account at an insured institution or covered by a bond. It does not require interest to be paid to the tenant.
