Last reviewed 2026-10-15

Does a landlord have to provide smoke and carbon monoxide detectors in Massachusetts?

One- and two-family dwellings must have approved smoke detectors, installed by the owner, on each level of habitation and in the basement. Larger buildings fall under M.G.L. c. 148 §§ 26A–26B, which this site has not reviewed.
