Connecticut Repairs and habitability remedies

Last reviewed 2026-10-15

What can a tenant do if the landlord won't make repairs in Connecticut?

If heat, water, hot water, electricity, gas or another essential service is not supplied, the tenant may give notice and buy the service and deduct it, get substitute housing after 48 hours, or (if the failure is willful) end the lease and recover two months' rent or double damages. Tenants may also sue in housing court and pay rent into court to enforce the landlord's duties.
