New Jersey Retaliation protections

Last reviewed 2026-10-15

Is landlord retaliation illegal in New Jersey?

Yes. A landlord may not evict, substantially change lease terms, or refuse to renew in reprisal for a tenant enforcing lease or legal rights, making a good-faith code complaint (after written notice to the landlord), or joining a tenant organization. Applies to all dwelling rentals except owner-occupied two- or three-family homes.
