Mississippi Deposit return deadline

Last reviewed 2026-10-15

How long does a landlord have to return a security deposit in Mississippi?

The landlord may keep only amounts reasonably needed for unpaid rent, damage beyond normal wear and tear, cleaning or other default costs, itemized in writing. The rest must be returned within 45 days after the tenancy ends, possession is delivered and the tenant makes a demand. Bad-faith retention can add up to $200 in damages on top of actual damages.
