Indiana Criminal & credit history rules
Can a landlord deny a tenant for criminal or credit history in Indiana?
Indiana bars cities, towns and counties from regulating the screening process a landlord uses to approve tenants for privately owned rental property (including criminal and credit checks) unless the General Assembly authorizes it, so local "fair chance" or screening ordinances are void. Federal fair housing law still applies. Statute text: "Any ordinance or regulation that violates this subsection is void and unenforceable." (Ind. Code § 32-31-1-20(c)(1)).
