Hawaii Repairs and habitability remedies
What can a tenant do if the landlord won't make repairs in Hawaii?
After written notice from a health or other agency, the landlord must start repairs within 7 days. If not, the tenant can make the repairs and deduct the greater of $1,000 or one month's rent (§ 521-64). For a condition that deprives the tenant of a substantial part of the bargain, the tenant can end the lease if it isn't fixed within one week of written notice (§ 521-63(a)).
