District of Columbia Interest on deposits

Last reviewed 2026-10-15

Does a landlord have to pay interest on a security deposit in District of Columbia?

Deposits must be held in an interest-bearing escrow account at an insured DC financial institution. Interest accrues to the tenant at no less than the statement savings rate (reset Jan. 1 and July 1) and is payable at the end of any tenancy of 12 months or more. The landlord must post yearly where deposits are held and the rates paid.
