Can a tenant fix something and deduct it from rent in Alabama?

No. Alabama's landlord-tenant act (all sections read) gives tenants no repair-and-deduct remedy. For serious defects the tenant may give 14 days' notice to terminate (§ 35-9A-401) or use the essential-services remedies (§ 35-9A-404), and may not withhold rent while in possession (§ 35-9A-164).
